If you're a regular reader of this blog, you'll be able to figure out to what movie I'm referring. If you aren't, I'm sure you'll get it quickly enough. (Okay, fine. It's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Spoiler Alert!!!!)
Okay, I liked the film. Most of my post is probably going to be concerned with things I didn't like, but just be assured that I liked it overall; I liked it really well, and it's probably my favourite of the series so far. Okay, my problems: 1) Hermione comes off a little too mean in hurtling the magically-animated birds at Ron. That's because they cut out a lot of the foundation of the feud between them, so she doesn't actually have much of a legitimate reason to be mad at him in the film, as she does in the book. Too little Luna, Neville, and "Weasley is our King". The attack at Christmas - Why????? It's a really pointless addition, actually sorta wrecks some plot points, and, perhaps most importantly, it wastes perfectly good screentime in which they could've included some of the things from the book which were cut. (Book 7 spoilers contained within red parentheses) Dumbledore doesn't stun Harry (okay, that's sorta out of character for Harry, but it isn't the biggest problem). This means that he basically lets Malfoy disarm him, meaning he lets the Elder Wand go to Malfoy's posession, whereas in book seven, the key bit about the end is that Dumbledore had planned for the wand's power to die with him because nobody bested him, and the key to the end of the series is that the flaw in this plan by having Malfoy beat him backfires on Tom Riddle. Furthermore, the Elder Wand isn't in the Tomb with Dumbledore!!! (End of Book 7 spoilers) What else? I missed Trelawney's prediction. I also don't really like how they changed the circumstances of the first Harry/Ginny kissing. Oh and I didn't like some of the stuff at the beginning - Harry in the diner was ok, but asking the girl out - no - and Dumbledore just showing up out of the blue - no. Oh and Dumbledore asking about Harry and Hermione - Really? Really? Dumbledore was a Harmony 'shipper? For Pete's sake...
I think that's about it... which is actually pretty darn good, considering that it's me and a book I love.

Um, what do you mean you missed Trelawney's prediction - does she make one in Book 6? Or are you referring to the whole thing coming out about Snape having overheard part of the prophecy and turning it in to Voldy (not sure if this was revealed in book 5 or if it was book 6).

ReplyDeleteI'm talking about how Harry ran into her when he was hiding the book, and she definitely said something about Malfoy, and she definitely said something about the lightning-struck tower. I don't remember the details exactly.
ReplyDeleteI remember now - she was going through a tarot deck and a card that came up was the lightning-struck tower and another was about Harry (though she didn't know it). He wasn't hiding the book, I'm pretty sure he was on his way to see Dumbledore...
